Equal opportunities Equal opportunities

The principle of equal opportunities is treating all people in the same manner, without being influenced by status, disposition or personal characteristics. The policy of equal opportunities seeks to eliminate discrimination of both individuals and groups of people.
The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination; it harmonises and replaces much of the preceding anti-discrimination laws, making the legislation easier to understand.
It is important that employers offer equal opportunity in regard to employment. Employers must not discriminate at any point of the employment cycle, from the selection of staff through to ending the employment.
It is therefore imperative that all employers have equal opportunities policies and procedures in place that will give protection against unfair discrimination on the grounds of:
  • Age
  • Disability
  • Race and nationality
  • Gender
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Religion and belief
  • Sexual orientation
The purpose of equal opportunities policies and procedures should be to ensure that anyone that comes into contact with the business is always treated equally and fairly.
