Maternity Leave Maternity leave

A pregnant employee has the right to take up to 52 weeks of maternity leave around the birth of their child. This consists of 26 weeks of ordinary maternity leave and 26 weeks of additional maternity leave. An employee must tell their employer by the end of the 15th week before the expected birth to qualify for maternity leave.
Once notification has been given the employer must then write to the employee, within 28 days, stating the return date. To change the return date the employee must then provide a minimum of 8 weeks’ notice.
All mothers must take at least two weeks maternity leave following the birth of their child as a recovery period.

Antenatal leave

All pregnant employees have the right to reasonable time off with pay for antenatal care the employer may request documents showing that an appointment has been made.

Statutory maternity pay

Statutory maternity pay is payable to employees that have been employed continuously for at least 26 weeks the rate of statutory maternity pay is reviewed every April. Mothers that do not qualify for statutory maternity pay may be entitled to claim maternity allowance form the Benefits Agency.
