Training is teaching a person a particular behaviour that helps them learn how to do something; this can be simply telling someone what they should or shouldn’t do, or giving them information.

Training is a necessary investment in order to ensure that your workforce has the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to meet your business objectives. It is therefore essential to ensure that there is adequate training and development provided.

Training law

Health and safety law requires all employers to provide whatever information, instruction, training as is necessary to ensure (as far as is reasonably practicable) the health and safety of their workforce.

The right for an employee to request time to train came into operation in April 2010 for those that employ 250 and more. The plan to extend the right to employees in smaller organisations has now been dropped.
To be eligible to request time off work for training or study:
  • The worker must be classed as an ‘employee’
  • The employee must have worked for the employer for at least 26 weeks
  • The training must help them do their job better

Unless the employer agrees time off for training or study is usually unpaid.
